Revolution is a topical spot-on product which is commonly used in cats and dogs. Revolution for cats:
- kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching
- prevents heartworm infection
- treats and controls ear mites
- treats and controls roundworm infections
- treats and controls hookworm infections
What is Revolution for Cats?
Revolution for cats contains a medication known as selamectin. When applied to the skin, selamectin enters the bloodstream through the skin. In the bloodstream, selamectin is effective at preventing heartworm infections and roundworm and hookworm infections.
Once in the blood stream, selamectin is then redistributed into the skin, where it is able to kill adult fleas, prevent flea eggs from hatching and prevent and control ear mites.
How is Revolution Used in the Cat?
Revolution for cats is a liquid medication which is applied to the skin of a cat once monthly. Revolution for cats should be applied to the skin between the shoulder blades of the cat or on the back of the neck.
Revolution for cats can be used on cats over eight weeks of age. It is also safe for cats which are nursing or pregnant. It can be used on both male and female cats which are used for breeding purposes as well.
Revolution should not be used on cats which are sick, weak, or debilitated.
Potential Side Effects Seen with Revolution for Cats
On rare occasions, Revolution for cats may cause:
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- lack of appetite
- muscle tremors
- excessive drooling
- rapid breathing
- depression and lethargy
Revolution for cats has also been known to cause hair loss near the area of application. The area of hair loss may or may not be itchy.
Advantages of Using Revolution for Cats
One of the major advantages of using Revolution for cats is that this medicine is effective in controlling both heartworms and fleas, both of which are seen in cats on a frequent basis. While there are many medicines which effectively control either heartworms or fleas individually, Revolution is one of the few products for cats which can control both simultaneously.
Heartworm infections can be serious in cats and are difficult to diagnose and treat. Cats infected with heartworms can die from the infection. Preventing heartworms is the most effective means of dealing with the threat of heartworms to cats.
Fleas are commonly seen parasites in cats and even those cats which are housed strictly indoors can get fleas. Fleas can transmit tapeworms, cat scratch disease and other illnesses to cats. Prevention and control of fleas is an important part of responsible cat ownership.
In addition, Revolution for cats also controls roundworm and hookworm infections in cats. These intestinal parasites can cause disease for the cat and they can also be passed to people. Control of these parasites protects not only the cat, but also the family members living within the household.
Revolution is an easily administered product because it a topical medication which is applied to the skin. Cat owners do not need to attempt to "pill" the cat or expect the cat to ingest the medicine. It is applied once monthly which is convenient for most cat owners.
Drawbacks of Using Revolution in Cats
While Revolution is effective in controlling many parasites in cats, it is not effective in controlling ticks. If a cat is at risk for tick exposure, another product which treats both fleas and ticks as well as other parasites is preferable.
Though side effects are rare in cats when using Revolution, they can occur. If an individual cat is sensitive to Revolution, another parasite prevention medicine may need to be chosen instead.
