Breeding cats go into heat twice each year, and if Fluffy sleeps on her owner's bed, that can be a sanitary issue. An incontinent dachshund can really stress out too.

For many people pets are family and emotions run high when family dogs or cats get sick or go into heat. The worry over pets’ well-being is hard to balance with the odor and mess left by their accidents. Pet owners are often stumped over what to do.

Go Green with Cloth Diapers

One solution easy on the wallet and the carpet is fabric diapers. Fabric diapers don’t add to the landfill. They can cost up to $10.00 each in retail stores or on the internet. However, they can be handmade much cheaper.

According to guests’ comments on Thrifty.com about pet incontinence and menstruation from September 2008 to March 2009, thick terry cloth or cotton cut in the shape of a T works well at about 3 inches wide and 9inches long, for small dog and cat diapers. Cut a hole for the tail and use Velcro® on both ends to fasten around the stomach. Cloth diapers are easy to use, green on the environment, and machine washable. For extra protection, a panty liner cut in half can be placed inside with the sticky side down and easily replaced. No more mess.

Retail Disposable Pet Diapers Expense and Waste

Disposable diapers do not decompose in the landfills at any acceptable rate. Retail small disposable pet diapers can start at $9.99 for an 18 count package of Target store’s Simply Out® brand. PetSmart also carries the Simple Solution® brand, starting at about $12.99 for a 10 count package.

Homemade Disposable Pet Diapers Save Money on the Go

Occasionally, disposable diapers are the only sanitary option, especially when traveling. Getting sick pets with bladder control issues to the veterinarian without soiling themselves is nearly impossible without disposable pet diapers.

Small disposable baby diapers can start at $10.99 for a 40 count package of Target store’s Pampers® brand. Small pet owners can save a lot of money by purchasing diapers in store baby aisles instead of the pet supply aisle.

Baby disposable diapers can be made into cat and small dog diapers easily and cheaply. The tools needed are a pair of scissors and 1”-2” masking tape. Using the scissors cut a small opening for the pet’s tail about 1 inch below the waistline of the front of the diaper. Using the masking tape, cover the edges of the cut opening to prevent leakage. Baby diapers fit better on pets with the back facing the front and the front facing the back.

Small pets’ anxieties decrease when owners cover them in pet diapers for incontinence or menstruation issues. Cats and dogs can maintain their active lifestyle with their humans.
